What is File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

By Angela Bradley, About.com

What is FTP?: FTP or File Transfer Protocol is what we use to get files from our computers onto a remote server and back again. Most often we use this for connecting to a site on the Internet, although you can use FTP on a LAN. While there are public FTP sites that you can download from without a login, for our purposes you will be using it to add files to your hosting space.

When you use FTP to connect to your hosting space online you will be prompted for your username and password and then taken to the area where your files are held. From here you can upload to your server or download from your server. You can also do other things here such as change file permissions, create folders and sub folders, delete files and folders, or rename files and folders.
