I have to say I learned a lot from online sources such as Angela’s articles but the majority of what I have learned came from asking questions and reading. My favorite PHP book is PHP: For the World Wide Web by Larry Ulman and I also enjoyed The Sam’s series of PHP books. Petah go troll somewhere else, Angela keep the articles coming.

Online college course from Cerro Coso College plus online classes taught from Sitepoint as refreshers. I also like the books written by FriendsOfEd such as PHP Solutions, and PHP Object oriented Solutions.

Hi Angela,

When I was close to finishing my second BS, I took a ed2go course on Beginning PHP and MySQL back in 2008. I like what I was doing, so I went on to take the Intermediate course, studied books, including Beginner’s PHP MySQL 5.0, High Performance MySQL. I also began doing projects for free to get “real world” experience. Eventually, I started to land bigger projects and am now studying Ruby.

I have to say that although the lessons shown in your weekly About.com blog are simple, they really help emphasize understanding the basics..something I did not have a strong background in until I started reading your PHP MySQL learning snippets and subscribing to other developer blogs/posts. Thanks for your weekly dose of programming knowledge :D

I have to have a project to work with to learn something like php. I agreeded to build a high school reunion webstie for all classes (40 years) to teach myself php and build dynamic webpages. Have little experience dabbling with html.

I perfer books to use and search online to fill in the gaps. Best books I’ve found are by Larry Ullman. Started with his basic book PHP 3rd editions and added a couple more.

I agree with the other comments, you have to know the basic, still learning.

thanks

I think that Angelas stuff is aimed at basic users… so obviously petta or whatever is an advanced user… I think Angela helps those who want to learn the basics, after that the only way to learn is RTFM then play til you get it right.
