Stop Spam

Friday May 11, 2007
Spam (or unsolicited mail and posts) is a big problem on the internet. The internet is full of bots that farm for e-mail addresses to spam, register to forums and automatically post their link, or reply to your blog posts promoting their products. Fortunately there are ways to help cut down on spam.

To prevent bots from finding your e-mail address on your website, it is best to let users contact you using a PHP email form. This way your e-mail address never actually appears on your website for bots to read. Customers can still easily contact you, and you won't be put on any spam lists.

If you are having trouble with your forum or blog being spammed, and the built in spam features aren't cutting it, you can try looking for a mod that might help. Mods can prevent spam by adding additional criteria on the registration form to prove the user is human, restricting the posting of URLs, or requiring posts to be authorized until the user in question is proven to be human.
